“Like other commemorations the aim of our commemoration today is to bring an event back to memory, be it a happy one or an unhappy one. In our case it’s a tragic as well as a fortunate event if we refer to the liberation of the concentration camp after all. Beyond that, the commemoration serves us to reflect about what had really happened: its meaning, its scale and its consequences.”

President of the International Sachsenhausen Committee
